Taking Our Freedom For Granted

Posted in News at 2:50 pm by Jim

Christians in China continue to suffer persecution and arrest simply because they are Christians.

The Christian Post reports,

Police recently arrested four American Christian leaders and dozens of Chinese house church leaders during a fellowship gathering in a northwest province in China. The Americans had arrived at Akesu airport in Akesu city, Xinjiang province, on Apr. 17 and started meeting with house church leaders in the region for fellowship on Apr. 18 at a local church family house, reported China Aid Association’s sources on Tuesday. However, just two days after their arrival, on Apr. 19, China’s Public Security Bureau (PSB) reportedly arrested about 30 Chinese house church leaders who met with the American Christians and detained the Americans. At the time of the CAA report Tuesday, the four Americans were still behind held in an undisclosed hotel for questioning along with their translator Mr. Jinhong Li from Beijing. China’s PSB officials confiscated the Americans’ luggage from the local church family they were staying with on Monday.

So, while many Christians in America take for granted the Church, ignore it, have nothing to do with it, Chinese Christians continue to suffer for it and endure hardship for it. It sort of makes American Christianity seem kind of lame, doesn’t it? Perhaps one day the Church will matter as much to American Christians as it does to so many others. But by then it will probably be too late.

This Summer’s ‘Singing School’

Posted in Announcements, Church Life, News at 5:21 pm by Jim

Trey writes

Dear Singing Friends,

I am pleased to announce that the Morgan County Singing School will be held June 25,26,28, and 29 at Union Baptist Church.  As was the case last year, the school will welcome the entire community and be for no particular congregation.  I believe that we had at least a half dozen different churches represented last year.

Ira Griffith and I will be leading sessions.  We may also have a special class for younger kids if enough are interested.

We will not meet on Wednesday night of the week in observance of mid-week services at churches.  The closing program will be held on Friday night.  (I’m sure we will be having snacks one night as well!)

I will be sending out more information in May.  Be inviting your church and friends to attend.  Anyone that loves to sing is welcome to join in the fun that we have praising the Lord!

If you have any questions, e-mail  me at treydaugherty@hotmail.com

Thanks,
Trey Daugherty

Keep Your Children Safe

Posted in Community, News at 9:59 am by Jim

From time to time every parent in our county needs to visit the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry.  Take a look at the photos of the persons who have been convicted of a crime, and if you see them near your children, call the Sheriff’s office immediately.

It’s astonishing how many offenders live in Morgan County, and some aren’t even in prison!

Keep your children safe.  Keep an eye on them, and don’t let them roam around out of eyesight.

I apologize for this- but, in the last 24 hours I’ve had considerable difficulties with emails being lost and rejected.  If you have written me a note in the last day or so and I haven’t responded, please resend it.  I think (hope) the problem is fixed and I apologize for mentioning it here.

Modern Martyrs

Posted in Church Life, Prayer Request at 11:02 am by Jim

It’s not safe to be a Christian in Turkey because some Muslims there believe that killing them protects Islam. CNN reports on the sub-human execution of three Christians in eastern Turkey,

Police detained five more suspects Thursday in the attack at a Christian publishing house that distributes Bibles. Some reportedly said they carried out the killings to protect Islam. The three victims — a German man and two Turks who converted to Christianity — were found a day earlier with their hands and legs tied and their throats slit. Their faces were bruised, and the ropes had cut into their wrists. On Friday, the Hurriyet newspaper reported that at least one victim was stabbed many times. “There were so many stab wounds that we couldn’t count them,” Hurriyet quoted Dr. Murat Ugras as saying. “It was clearly torture.”

Barbarians. Which faith seems nearer to God? A faith that prays for the enemy or a faith that slits the enemies’ throat?  Pray for the victim’s families.

That Wall, Again

Posted in Church Life, Photos at 9:50 am by Jim

The wall is going up- as you can see.  It doesn’t seem that it will take them long to get it finished now.  And though the color of the brick is not exactly the same, the texture is.
